LOGGER by K4CY

"LOGGER" provides terminal program capabilities for data modes such as PACTOR, AMTOR, RTTY as well as other data modes using a TNC such as the KAM+ or your favorite TNC.  It also provides another adaptation of Peter Martinez's PSK31 using a sound card which includes logging, type ahead buffer, and up to 27 macros which can be programmed for about any use you can imagine.  Rig control features are incorporated to provide frequency readout as well as mode during all operations.  Screen shots can be seen on KC4ELO's home page by clicking on the word LOGGER and selecting Screen Shots.

If you will look at the bottom portion of the screen shot you will see the many macro key spaces.  On the right hand portion of the macro key spaces you will see the conventional 9 keys which are used for transmit and receive control as well as other functions which are not user programmable.  You may notice that some of the macro keys have a letter with the under score such as the one for "Tx" which indicates the use of a hot key which can be implemented by use of Alt-T to place the transceiver in transmit.  Look over the macro keys and you will see other adaptations of this convention.

I think that many who are interested in becoming a user of the LOGGER program would like to know where they can obtain the program and generally how to setup the program.  While many experienced users of computer programs related to amateur radio may find some of the explanation that follows to be too detailed for them.   If this be the case then the next thing they should do is click on the X in the most top right of this page and their problem is solved.  For the remainder of readers please bear with me.

First thing you should do is download the program from the internet.  Following is the download location for the latest LOGGER program.  Click on this URL and it will take you directly to the download site.  The downloaded programs are too large to fit on a floppy disk.

Now that you have downloaded the program it is time to install per instructions contained in the "READ.ME" file or the "NOTES.TXT" file.

After you have completed installation of the program it is time to start the program and then go through setting up the program to suit your operating style/habits and to match your equipment.  I strongly recommend the following sequence of activity related to getting the program up and running with the least bit of problems.

After starting the program per instructions contained in the READ.ME file you should then left mouse click on the "?" in the top right portion of the screen and this will bring up the help screen.  Now left mouse click on the Search function of help and select the following subjects  in order shown below and go completely through all of these items.

        1.  Getting Started

        2.  Quick Start

        3.  First Step

        4.  Initial Setup

        5.  Data Mode Setup

        6.  PSK31 Setup

        7.  PSK31 Macros

        8.  Telnet Setup

        9.  Snap Control (this will set the screen to the format you wish)

After you have followed the above setup sequence and reviewed completely the settings you have selected I then recommend you move about the screen with the mouse cursor and click on any and all elements of the screen such as the "MODE" listing in the Log Data Entry Window.  Find out what ones come up with another window which gives you capability to change elements such as the mode, band, etc..  One of the most misunderstood elements is the Band Plan and how it is setup.  Go to the help file and review that portion related to Band Plan completely. I also recommend you spend some time understanding the 27 macro keys in PSK31 setup as well as the 9 function keys and what they will or can do for you.  After completing all of the above you should be in good shape to start using the program.  If you do not do the above I can guarantee you that you will encounter difficulty with the program and also that it will be "cock-pit" problems as the program when set up properly will function flawlessly.

I currently use the program for all modes using the following equipment at my location:

Yaesu FT1000D, KAM+, Sound Blaster SB16 sound card .

Good luck on use and enjoyment of the "LOGGER" program and should you have difficulty do not hesitate to send an e-mail to me at "realbill@w5bbr.com" describing your problem and I will try to help as best I can.
